We are excited to display a special exhibit in the Kendall Public Lobby (between 355 and 325 Main Street), from May 17 through June 18. The exhibit is done in collaboration with the City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Museum of History and Culture, as well as the Cambridge Redevelopment Authority, the History Project, and MIT.  We also invite you to join us for a celebratory reception on Friday May 17, from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.

Learn more about the exhibit:

At the stroke of midnight on May 17, 2004, history was made as Cambridge City Hall opened its doors to become the very first municipality in the United States to issue marriage licenses to same-gender couples. The air was thick with anticipation, and jubilant celebration filled the front lawn of City Hall as couples gathered to embark upon a momentous journey together.

Step back in time and relive the magic of that historic night through the lens of photographer Marilyn Humphries. Capturing the essence of love, hope, and equality, Humphries’ lens immortalized the raw emotions and joyous celebrations as scores of couples took the courageous step towards legal recognition and acceptance.

This exhibit features 30 striking images, each of them a testament to the courage and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. From tender embraces to triumphant smiles to the enthusiasm of City staff gathering to help make this night a reality, these photographs encapsulate the spirit of love overcoming adversity, and of the City of Cambridge proudly making strides into the history books.

As we reflect on the journey towards equality, let us celebrate the victories, honor the pioneers, and continue the fight for a more inclusive and just society. Love knows no bounds, and together, we can create a world where everyone is free to love and be loved without fear or discrimination.
